Tartu Student Days open with pancake breakfast and new events

Student Days began in Tartu on Monday with a pancake breakfast that drew students and passers-by to Town Hall Square for free pancakes and other food, ERR reported.

The autumn event again filled the square with the smell of food and long queues. Alongside pancakes, visitors could choose instant noodles, buckwheat, grilled sandwiches and, for the first time, muesli.

“I do not think we are competing with pancakes. They are still the classic here,” student Saara said. She added that the muesli was running out, although four flavours and three types of yoghurt had been available.

The jam jars were empty by the end of the day, but there were still enough pancakes. Students Ekke Pärtel and Ronja said they had gained “the student experience” of scraping the last jam from the bottom of the jar.

Eneken Riin, who took a break from making pancakes, said she was eating buckwheat instead. “It is still the most suitable food for students,” she said, adding that there was enough batter to make pancakes by the bucketful.

Student Days project manager Carmen Helena Hallimäe said this autumn festival would introduce two new events. A morning rave will take place on the Emajõgi riverbank on Tuesday, while a game of tag will be held in Pirogovi Park on Thursday evening.

The festival continues through Sunday and includes the annual initiation of first-year students, parties and other events connected with student life.
