Ugala honours audience favourites at 107th season opening

Ugala Theatre presented its audience awards at the opening party for its 107th season on Saturday evening, ERR reported. The Golden Apples recognised favourites from the previous season in three categories, based on votes cast online and at the theatre by 839 visitors.

Aarne Soro won the Golden Apple for best male actor for the 11th time. He was recognised for his roles in Superstar, The Cripple of Inishmaan and The Quality Person or The Bourgeois Nobleman.

Luule Komissarov received the Golden Apple for best female actor for her performances in Kondas and the Strawberry Eaters and The Cripple of Inishmaan.

The audience chose Diana Leesalu’s production of The Cripple of Inishmaan as the best new production of the previous season. Johan Elm’s The Price of Living came second, followed by Maria Peterson’s The Quality Person or The Bourgeois Nobleman.

Ugala also presented its recognition award for the previous season. Theatre director Heigo Teder gave it to Viljandi Hospital, a valued partner that provided major assistance during the season. Their collaboration produced last summer’s popular production Shorter Than Life at the old Viljandi hospital.

The awards for the winners were again made by Külli Allikvee of the Heimtali creative studio, while the recognition award illustration was created by Liis Roden. Each winner also received a freshly picked apple from Ugala Theatre’s orchard, planted beside the theatre in 2020.
