Ulmenthal, Taukar and An-Marlen lead ERR’s new music roundup

ERR’s latest new music roundup features new releases from Ulmenthal, Ouu, Ellip, Dyvour, Zebra Island, Karl-Erik Taukar and An-Marlen, Kreemikast, Smilers and Ingra.

A long period of rain has brought the first substantial harvest of the autumn season. Taukar and An-Marlen have unexpectedly joined forces, Ulmenthal is building toward a debut album, and several other Estonian artists have returned with fresh music.

Ulmenthal – “Hästi”

Ulmenthal, the stage name of Eeva Trei, released one of last year’s most intriguing local EPs, “All My Dreams”. She continues to make layered pop music, with a full-length debut album due at the beginning of November.

The album will feature pop influenced by dance music, as does Friday’s new single, “Hästi”. The song has an unexpectedly positive message and is Ulmenthal’s first song in Estonian.

Ouu – “Teine tera”

Ouu, which is soon heading on an unexpected and mysterious tour of Japan, has released another single ahead of the trip. “Teine tera” is the B-side of the double single “Hõõguv planeet”, although the A-side has not yet been released.

The song itself is not particularly complicated. It continues in the same gentle, subdued vein that suits the band, but sounds perhaps even more impressionistic than its earlier work.

Ellip – “Watch Me Go”

Ellip, the stage name of Pille-Riin Karro, has returned with a new song after a break of several years. After exploring EDM several years ago, Ellip is continuing to search for a more familiar combination of soul, groove and pop-funk.

This time, she worked with producer Martin Laksberg, and appears to be getting closer to her destination with each release. “The song could feel cheerful and light enough that you do not immediately realise that someone is actually being sent into the woods,” the artist said.

Ellip also promised to release a full-length album with Laksberg next year.

Dyvour – “Poolkoer”

What if rapper-poet Eigi, or Eik, had a dark counterpart to Spider-Man: a Venom-Eik? That is roughly what genre-fluid Dyvour, the stage name of Mattias Mägi, offers with his new song.

Dyvour combines electronic music with rap and names JPEGMAFIA and Death Grips among his influences.

Zebra Island – “Fool’s Gold”

The record label Seksound has released a new single by Zebra Island, which returned to the stage this year. It is the band’s first single after a 10-year break.

Zebra Island largely stays true to its established style: synth-driven dream pop with a slightly Kate Bush-like chorus, coloured by quietly shimmering guitars and xylophones. The band has promised more new music by the end of the year.

Karl-Erik Taukar and An-Marlen – “Teineteiseta”

When a Kaubamaja autumn campaign poster featuring An-Marlen and Karl-Erik Taukar appeared, it seemed to be more than an advertising campaign: it was also a promise of a joint song.

The first question was which artist would enter the other’s musical world: would Taukar appear over Boipepperoni’s synthesisers, or would An-Marlen feature on a pop-rock track? The second option proved correct, although the first may still be waiting for release.

Kreemikast – “Ma ei teadnudki, et nii saab”

Kreemikast, the stage name of Marto Mägi, has released “Ma ei teadnudki, et nii saab”, a new single from his upcoming album “Siin on hea”.

As usual, Kreemikast’s songs offer a more down-to-earth glimpse of what might be happening inside the mind of a contemporary person, without drawing the kind of fantastical musical parallels associated with Lucy Bedroque. Presumably, this is roughly what the whistles and clatters inside the mind would sound like.

Amid them, a brave person wanders around, trying to look as though everything around them is not on fire.

Smilers – “Ahvatlused”

Smilers has released the unexpectedly bluesy, and perhaps even slightly glam-influenced, new song “Ahvatlused”. The music and lyrics are by Hendrik Sal-Saller.
