NMA says it reported Orlickas to authorities in July

The National Paying Agency (NMA) said on Friday that it had reported deputy director Tomas Orlickas to Lithuania’s Chief Official Ethics Commission and Special Investigation Service in July over a suspected conflict between his public and private interests. LRT reported that the agency sent the information on July 16.

The NMA said it suspected Orlickas had confused public and private interests while carrying out international projects. It added that it had fully cooperated with the Financial Crime Investigation Service, or FNTT, which is conducting the investigation, and had provided all requested information.

The agency said it could not comment further to avoid harming the pre-trial investigation. Law enforcement authorities will decide whether anyone should be held responsible, it said.

The NMA said its functions were continuing and that director Fortunatas Dirginčius had not been charged or suspended. He has been granted procedural witness status, the agency said.

As reported by BNS, a court suspended Orlickas from his duties as the European Public Prosecutor’s Office investigates possible corruption at the NMA. Several other NMA employees have also been charged.

FNTT carried out searches at the NMA for the second time this week on Thursday, including in Dirginčius’ office. FNTT has said the pre-trial investigation concerns suspected abuse of office to provide unlawful advantages to people involved in European Union-funded projects.
