Fourteen political lists seek seats in Latvia’s next parliament

Fourteen political lists, including new and established parties and alliances, are running in Latvia’s 15th Saeima elections, according to Latvian public broadcaster LSM. The broadcaster examined each political force’s origins, leadership changes, splits and mergers, time in government and opposition, and scandals over the past four years.

Among the contenders are the Sovereign Power and New Latvians Alliance parties, which have gradually grown from small niche groups into notable political forces, partly through activity on social media. They gained popularity as Covid sceptics during the pandemic.

Before the 2025 municipal elections, the two parties decided to run together and submitted lists in every municipality. The alliance’s results became an election surprise, and it is now hoping to perform well in the parliamentary elections.

New political project led by a theatre director

We Change the Rules is a new political project in this election. It was previously called Republika, a party once founded by several former members of KPV LV, which later disintegrated after a short period of popularity, and Saskaņa politician Vjačeslavs Dombrovskis.

Republika became We Change the Rules after theatre director Alvis Hermanis joined the party and took over its leadership.

Saskaņa seeks a return to parliament

Saskaņas centrs, later known as Saskaņa, changed its name several times and was the country’s most popular party for many years. It also achieved the strongest results in parliamentary elections, but was consistently left in opposition.

After its defeat in the 14th Saeima elections, the party split and several of its prominent leaders left. It has now been revived under veteran politician Jānis Urbanovičs and hopes to return to parliament.
