A drone several metres wide has been found in a forest near Keneliai village in Pasvalys district, LRT and BNS reported on Wednesday. Preliminary information indicates that it is unlike either a Shahed or a Gerbera-type drone.
The report was received by the Emergency Response Centre at about 1:06 p.m. Foresters discovered the drone while inspecting areas affected by a storm and preparing to clear fallen trees.
Giedrius Bronušas, head of the Panevėžys regional unit of the State Forest Enterprise, told LRT that the drone was about three metres wide and shaped like an aircraft. It was covered with grass and may have fallen several months ago.
“The forest ranger came across it among the grass while carrying out the work. Whether it became overgrown or landed in the grass when it fell, I do not know, but it was found in the forest among the grass,” Bronušas said.
He added that the drone appeared to be largely intact, with its wings and fuselage clearly visible. Police cordoned off the location and officers were guarding it. Bomb disposal experts from the police anti-terrorist operations unit ARAS and members of the Lithuanian Armed Forces were sent to the scene under the Skydas plan.
Police Department representative Ramūnas Matonis said the drone looked undamaged in photographs sent by officers. He said more detailed information about its type would be provided after the location had been examined.
The National Crisis Management Centre said experts were expected to assess the drone in detail. Pumpėnai local administrative head Ieva Petrauskaitė said the discovery was in a remote area with a few residents and homesteads, surrounded by forest and farmland. Januškų Manor is located nearby.
