Seven translators nominated for August Sang poetry award

Seven translators have been nominated for Estonia’s August Sang Poetry Translation Award, ERR reported. The prize is being presented for the ninth time for the best Estonian-language translation of a poem published during the year.

The 2026 nominees are:

Amar Annus, for “The Great Hymn to the Sun God Šamaš,” translated from Akkadian and published in Akadeemia, issue 7.

Maarja Kangro, for Ernst Jandl’s “viin: heldenplatz,” translated from German and published in “Õnnesoov.”

Indrek Koff, for Vénus Khoury-Ghata’s “Mothers and the Mediterranean,” translated from French and published in Looming, issue 7.

Øyvind Rangøy, for Kjell Ivar Sandvik’s “A Leap After the Master,” translated from Norwegian and published in Looming, issue 2.

Paul-Eerik Rummo and Triinu Tamm, for Guillaume Apollinaire’s “The Little Car,” translated from French and published in “Süda Kroon Peegel.”

Jaan Undusk, for Nikolai von Rehbinder’s “Longing for Distance,” translated from German and published in “An Anthology of Baltic German Poetry.”

Katrin Väli, for Ljudmõla Taran’s “I Am This – Carpathian Salamander,” translated from Ukrainian and published in “Paradise Apples.”

The award ceremony will take place on September 30 at 6 p.m. in the black-ceilinged hall of the Estonian Writers’ Union.

This year’s jury comprised chair Margus Konnula, Anna-Magdaleena Kangro and Lauri Eesmaa.
