Minister sets shelter coverage targets for cities and districts

Lithuania’s Interior Ministry plans to invite municipalities to submit another round of civil protection shelter modernisation projects worth €16 million, Interior Minister Martynas Katelynas said, according to LRT.

The aim is to ensure that shelters can accommodate at least 60 percent of residents in cities and 40 percent in district municipalities, Katelynas said during a government question session in the Seimas on Tuesday.

The ministry has already allocated more than €30 million to municipalities for civil protection shelters. The government has pledged to modernise at least 1,000 shelters by 2028.

There are currently 6,645 shelters in municipalities across Lithuania, with capacity for about 1.6 million people, or 57 percent of the country’s population, according to Katelynas.
