ETV2 honours Rein Maran with 95th birthday theme evening

ETV2 will dedicate its Sunday theme evening to film cameraman and director Rein Maran, who turns 95 on September 13, ERR reports.

The programme begins at 1:20 a.m. with “From Person to Person: Contemporary Applied Art of the Estonian SSR,” a 1972 film featuring dancer Ülo Vilimaa. Maran brought together contemporary applied art and ballet, with ballet scenes performed by Vilimaa and Alla Udovenko.

At 4:30 p.m., ETV2 will show “Together with Nature,” a 2016 programme about Maran. He is described as one of the leading figures in Estonian nature documentaries. Journalist Margit Kilumets interviews the filmmaker, with Rait Veskemaa as director and Kadi Katarina Priske as producer.

The 2018 film “Maran” will be broadcast at 7:30 p.m. It focuses on Maran’s life and work, including his extensive and unique collection of nature films. As the author of nearly 50 films on nature, he has recorded valuable footage with a sensitive eye as a cameraman. The film also explores his philosophy of life and visits locations that are important to him.

“Maran” was made by Ants Tammik and produced by Tammik Film, with support from the Cultural Endowment of Estonia, the Estonian Film Institute and ERR.

The evening concludes at 8:20 p.m. with “Find an Ally in Nature,” a 1984 film about rodents that have become pests in human society and the small predators that regulate their numbers in the natural environment. The film examines whether members of the weasel family could also be used today to control pest rodents in areas affected by human activity. Viewers will encounter the striped field mouse, house mouse, yellow-necked mouse, brown rat, black rat, weasel, stoat and polecat.
