Memorial plaque unveiled at Mats Traat’s Tallinn home

ERR reports that a memorial plaque was unveiled on September 11 at the Tallinn home of Estonian writer Mats Traat, as a pre-event for the Literary Street Festival.

Traat, who lived from November 23, 1936, to July 27, 2022, was a prose writer, poet, playwright and translator. He published new works regularly for decades, until his death.

His largely realist writing, sometimes with a lyrical inclination, focused on home and homeland, nature and philosophy. He also explored social issues, village society, rural life and the way people change over time.

Traat joined the Estonian Writers’ Union in 1963 and served on its board from 1986 to 1992. He was a professional writer from 1970 to 2022 and became a member of the World Academy of Literature in 1985.

Tiit Aleksejev, Victoria Traat and Maarja Vaino spoke at the unveiling. Traat’s home is located at Lauteri 8 in Tallinn.
