Tartu Art School marks 75th anniversary with three-part exhibition

Tartu Art School will mark its 75th anniversary with a three-part exhibition opening at the Pallas gallery on Friday, September 18, ERR reported.

The exhibition is spread across three floors, with each section curated separately. The first-floor exhibition, “Where will you go next?”, features works by nearly 100 graduates and examines their paths after completing the school.

The exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, photographs, illustrations, graphic art, furniture, textiles, jewellery, ceramics and leather art created over different decades. It also covers architecture, design, music and other fields. The curators are Krista Roosi, Katrin Maask and Maarja Roosi.

The basement will host “Unbounded Surface”, an exhibition of student works created during constrained times, before the artists knew the answer to the question “Where will you go next?” It focuses especially on people whose studies remained unfinished or who have remained anonymous. Blank labels at the exhibition are intended to make the missing names visible again. Mari-Liis Krautmann is the curator.

On the second floor, visitors can see “7 1/2 Still Lifes”, curated by Ilja Jakovlev. The exhibition features still lifes from the school’s collection painted by students between 1957 and 2026. Each work represents one decade in the school’s history, while the selected works offer a glimpse of the spirit, ambitions and atmosphere of their time through their depicted objects and artistic choices.

The exhibition will remain open until October 17.
