Lithuania’s Interior Ministry has announced a competition for a new head of its Informatics and Communications Department, LRT reported on Wednesday.
The ministry is seeking a competent and experienced leader for a five-year term to ensure the operation of critical state information systems and communications infrastructure, while setting the department’s long-term direction for operations and technology development.
Interior Minister Martynas Katelynas said the new director would be expected not only to manage large-scale information systems infrastructure but also to initiate and implement significant organisational and technological changes.
“The Interior Ministry’s information systems and registers are directly linked to our national security and to the ability of law enforcement, migration, public security and other institutions to carry out their functions without interruption,” Katelynas said. “We are therefore looking not for an administrator who would simply oversee the current situation, but for a strong leader capable of improving it.”
The department is currently led on an interim basis by deputy director Artūras Kavolis.
It is responsible for developing, managing, expanding and securing the Interior Ministry’s information system, the National Schengen Information System, the National Visa Information System and other state information systems and registers. It also oversees the technological compatibility of these systems and information resources managed by the department.
The department is additionally responsible for developing, managing and securing Lithuania’s digital mobile radio communications network for public security and emergency services, as well as the Interior Ministry’s telecommunications network and the technological compatibility of their components.
Viktorija Rūkštelė, who had led the department since 2023, left the position in June after media reported that about 50 Interior Ministry system accounts may have been hacked, BNS reported.
