Rakvere Theatre will open its 87th season with Vootele Ruusmaa’s play Vöötrada on September 11, ERR reports. The play won a playwriting competition held two seasons ago to mark the theatre’s anniversary.
The poetic love story follows a married couple trying to move on after a miscarriage. The woman devotes all her efforts to caring obsessively for a bonsai, while the man tries to care for her despite also having lost his footing.
Andres Noormets, who is also responsible for the sound and set design, directs the production about overwhelming joy, unbearable grief and all-conquering love.
“The central theme of our play is the kind of loss that creates opportunities for new discoveries and movement to higher levels,” Noormets said. “In biblical terms, this could be expressed as follows: if a grain of wheat does not die, it remains alone, but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Or, in a more Zen-like sense, the death of the ego opens the way to boundless fertility and spiritual awakening.”
Maarja Viiding designed the costumes, Villu Konrad the lighting and Peeter Rästas the video. The cast includes Loviise Kapper, Anneli Rahkema and Rästas.
