Two-way speed camera cabinet to be installed in Muhu village

Estonia’s Transport Administration will install a new two-way speed camera cabinet in Liiva, a village in Muhu municipality, ERR reported. The cabinet will be placed on the Risti-Virtsu-Kuivastu-Kuressaare road at kilometre 78.6 to help enforce the 40 km/h speed limit and make it safer for pedestrians to cross the road.

The cabinet will face the Virtsu-Kuressaare direction but will be able to measure vehicle speeds in both directions.

The camera will not begin measuring speeds immediately. The necessary settings will first be configured and traffic arrangements adjusted to the new solution. The Transport Administration will announce when speed measurements begin.

A child was killed in a traffic accident in Liiva in May after being struck by a truck trailer.

Estonia’s national roads currently have 68 speed camera cabinets, six of which can measure speeds in both directions. The Transport Administration has 34 measurement systems that it moves between cabinets according to need.

The agency said fixed speed cameras help reduce speeding at dangerous locations, thereby lowering the likelihood of traffic accidents and their potential consequences. They also help monitor drivers’ behaviour in traffic.
