Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office has sent to court a criminal case against Algirdas Brazys, a member of the Marijampolė municipal council, who is accused of abuse of office, fraud, forgery and handling forged documents, LRT reported Monday.
According to the case file, Brazys allegedly falsified council members’ expense summaries between 2019 and 2021 by including inaccurate information about fuel costs.
The pretrial investigation found that Brazys may have used the allegedly falsified summaries to obtain nearly 5,000 euros for himself by deception after submitting them to the municipality’s accounting department.
He is also accused of abusing his official position to obtain financial benefits, thereby diminishing the authority of a council member, public trust in him as a politician and confidence in the Marijampolė municipality.
The case has been referred to the Marijampolė District Court. The investigation was organised and led by a prosecutor from the Organised Crime and Corruption Investigation Division of the Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office, while officers of the Special Investigation Service launched and conducted the inquiry.
