Police find 80 cannabis plants in Vilnius District

Police found about 80 illegally grown cannabis plants in Vilnius District, LRT reported, citing the Vilnius County Police Headquarters.

On September 1, officers searched the home of a Vilnius District resident as part of a pre-trial investigation into the illegal cultivation of poppies or cannabis.

They found greenhouses containing cannabis on the property, while cultivation facilities had also been set up in outbuildings and inside the house.

Officers also seized cannabis that was being dried or had already dried, cultivation equipment, a smoothbore shotgun, ammunition and other items relevant to the investigation.

After the amount of cannabis found was assessed, the investigation was expanded to include suspected illegal possession of narcotic or psychotropic substances with the intention of distributing them, or possession of a very large quantity of such substances.

A person suspected of the offences was arrested and remanded in custody. The alleged offences carry a prison sentence of 10 to 15 years.
