More than 400 caravans carrying nearly 1,000 participants have gathered in Obinitsa, a small settlement in Setomaa, ERR reported. The Estonian Caravan Club is holding its 34th motorhome gathering there.
Finding a parking space on Kooli Street in Obinitsa was difficult on Friday, as motorhomes attending the event had taken up the available spaces.
“Comfort and autonomy are the keywords. You can go out into nature and have everything you need for life with you. You are not dependent on schedules, times or bookings. You simply turn the ignition and set off,” said Liisi Laanemäe, a board member of the Estonian Caravan Club.
According to Laanemäe, participants include families and groups of friends of different ages, from younger families and beginners to experienced travellers who have brought their children along.
Organiser Ivar Kalev said participants would have plenty to do in Setomaa, which offers many places to visit. The programme includes workshops, hikes and caravan salons offering massages, hairdressing and foot care.
For the first time, services are also available for pets, with cats and dogs able to receive washing, grooming and nail trimming.
Participants described motorhome travel as a way of life and a mindset. The gathering gives like-minded people an opportunity to exchange experiences and impressions of travelling by caravan.
“There is a feeling of togetherness here. You see old acquaintances, look at other people’s vehicles and motorhomes, and talk about where everyone has been,” said a participant named Arvo.
Another participant, Tiia, said attendees could spend time in various workshops and on different hikes, while evening entertainment was also planned.
