Latvian parties split over how to make tax burden fairer

Latvia’s political parties are divided over whether to change the proportional tax burden on people with lower and higher incomes, LSM reported. The Latvian public media outlet asked parties and electoral alliances whether they would address a situation in which a low-paid employee pays proportionally more in taxes than a millionaire pays on capital income, and how they would do so.

The responses fall into two broad groups.

One group points to the need to develop the economy and businesses so that people can earn more. It includes Latvia First, We Change the Rules, For Latvia’s Development, Gobzems’ List and the New Conservative Party.

The second group supports reducing the proportional difference and proposes various approaches and solutions. It includes the Rising Sun for Latvia, ZZS, the Progressives, Harmony Centre, For Stability!, New Unity, the National Alliance and Sovereign Power.
