Former EU Commission representative joins team preparing Lithuania’s EU presidency

Former head of the European Commission’s representation in Lithuania Marius Vaščega has joined Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys’ team to help prepare for Lithuania’s presidency of the Council of the European Union, LRT reported.

“The European Commission is delegating me to help prepare for Lithuania’s presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2027. As of today, I am joining the team of the foreign minister,” Vaščega said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

He said his responsibilities would cover EU foreign and security policy, negotiations on the multiannual financial framework, enlargement and competitiveness.

“For four years I represented the Commission in Vilnius. From today, I will sit at the same table, only from the other side,” Vaščega said.

Vaščega was the European Commission’s official representative in Lithuania and reported politically to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Lithuania will hold the rotating presidency of the EU Council in the first half of 2027.
