Haapsalu lace day returns to newly renovated lace centre

Haapsalu’s 15th Lace Day was held at the newly renovated Haapsalu Lace Centre, ERR reported. The centre reopened after a year-long renovation, with the presidential couple attending its opening.

The event, dedicated to the famous Haapsalu shawl, brought together handicraft enthusiasts from near and far. Traditionally held during the White Lady Festival, the lace day included a knitting competition.

“Haapsalu lace is historical heritage for us and the city. It survives in its authentic form not only behind a display case, but lives on because it is still being made and renewed,” said Mirje Sims, the head of the Haapsalu Lace Centre.

The Haapsalu Handicraft Society operates the centre’s shop, welcomes museum visitors and manages the museum’s content. Its members also meet there every Tuesday to knit and create new patterns, Sims said.

More than 20 knitters took part in the traditional competition. They had two hours to knit a new Haapsalu shawl pattern.

“I have knitted before, but this is my first time taking part in the competition,” said Eleri, one of the contestants. She said her initial panic over not recognising the symbols had passed and the pattern was beginning to feel familiar.

Kärt, last year’s winner in the advanced category, said the competition was strong, including skilled knitters from the lace centre. She added that the entries were closely matched and that luck would also play a role.

“This is a completely new Haapsalu shawl pattern that no one has seen, let alone knitted before,” said Ivika, another contestant. “My heart and hands are trembling, but we will do our best.” She said the competition became stronger every year, which she viewed positively because lace should become more widely practised in Estonia.
