Läänemets accuses Reinsalu of pushing EKRE-Isamaa-Centre coalition

Estonian Social Democratic Party leader Lauri Läänemets accused Isamaa leader Urmas Reinsalu of trying to form a government with EKRE and the Centre Party without a substantive plan to address the country’s problems, ERR reported.

Speaking on the live broadcast of Aktuaalne kaamera, Läänemets said the Social Democrats did not support the current Reform Party-led government, but opposed the alternative that opposition parties were trying to assemble. He said his party would offer voters a clear alternative to both sides in the upcoming elections.

“The Social Democrats will do very well in these elections, and we will certainly offer an alternative both to the Reform Party, which has lost people’s trust, and to the EKRE-Isamaa-Centre government that Reinsalu is currently trying to force into existence. But I think it will not succeed,” Läänemets said.

Läänemets criticised Reinsalu for making general statements and called on Isamaa to present clear plans, saying that opposition to the Reform Party alone was not enough.

“We want Isamaa leader Urmas Reinsalu, who is currently the vaguest of all politicians, to explain Isamaa’s plan for the state’s finances and energy,” Läänemets said. “Everything is based solely on protest against the Reform Party.”

He compared Reinsalu’s communication style with former Prime Minister Kaja Kallas’s earlier statement that taxes would not rise, warning that it would inevitably lead to public disappointment.

“I recall that Kaja Kallas once said, ‘Read my lips,’ and people later became disappointed with the government’s actions. Urmas Reinsalu is now trying to do exactly the same thing,” Läänemets said. “There would be widespread disappointment in society, and the Social Democrats will not allow that.”
