Arming opens first solo exhibition at Hobusepea Gallery

Artist Andre Joosep Arming has opened his first solo exhibition at Hobusepea Gallery, ERR reported. The exhibition, titled “Chain Reaction,” opened on August 27 with a Renaissance-themed masquerade ball and will remain on view until September 27.

The opening performance was created by Linda Mai Kari. The exhibition brings together Arming’s works from 2018 to 2025 and presents three new series: “Don Quixote I,” “Detachment Does Not Exist” and “Epistemic Heart.”

Arming’s work centres on a poetic autobiographical portrait through which he explores his complex medical background and the life-affirming worldview that grew from it. His works move between the personal and the universal, combining memories, identity, time, love and mortality.

He draws inspiration from both pop culture and his visual everyday surroundings. Maximalism in his work is not only an aesthetic choice but also an attitude towards life and a resistance to simplification. During the exhibition, his alter ego “Mitte Surm,” or “Not Death,” also comes to life, addressing death through playfulness, absurdity and drama.

Arming has completed bachelor’s studies in photography and a master’s degree in contemporary art at the Estonian Academy of Arts. He mainly works with Polaroid photography and video. His work is characterised by autobiographical themes and an exploration of birth, death and the passage of time.

Arming is a member of the Estonian Union of Photography Artists and the Estonian Artists’ Union. He has taken part in group exhibitions in Estonia and abroad, including in Germany and Lithuania.
