Paabel draws on archive recordings for new album

Folk ensemble Paabel is using old runic songs, verses and stories as the foundation for its new music, musician Arno Tamm told ERR’s Vikerraadio.

Tamm said he enjoys wandering through archives because a search can unexpectedly lead to a remarkable recording.

Paabel ended its previous run after a concert in 2017 that combined nostalgia with new musical ideas, Tamm recalled. When the Viljandi Folk Festival marked its 30th anniversary, he suggested that the ensemble reunite for a performance.

The concert reminded the musicians of their strong chemistry. “After the concert, our eyes were shining and we thought that we could continue,” band member Tanel Kadalipp said.

The group’s return began with a conversation between Tamm and Jaan Jaago a few years ago. They agreed to use old runic songs, verses and stories as a framework, regardless of where the ensemble’s ideas or musical style might lead.

Paabel’s new album, titled Ajatu, or Timeless, also reflects changes among its musicians. “On the one hand, we continued from where we left off, but the musicians have developed, changed, gained experience, read, created and matured in the meantime,” Tamm said.

The ensemble now also includes Lauri Kadalipp, Tanel Kadalipp’s brother. Kadalipp said work on the album began in a traditional band camp, with the musicians developing material together. Later, Jaan Jaago and Lauri Kadalipp took the lead in the creative process, while Jaago and Tamm led the recording.

“Something timeless exists in Paabel’s group and in this music,” Tamm said, explaining the album’s title. The ensemble will give five concerts in autumn.

When searching for material, Tamm said he chooses a direction, region or singing style, but never knows where the search will lead. “That is what is so great about archive material: sometimes you simply stumble upon a fantastic recording,” he said.
