Rakvere Theatre moves stage to fortress for new play

Rakvere Theatre will turn the convent building at Rakvere Castle into its performance venue for the new production “Agnes Dei,” ERR reports. The play premieres there on October 9 and is directed by the theatre’s artistic director, Peeter Raudsepp.

Created in cooperation with the Virumaa Museums, the drama unfolds within the castle walls and follows a young nun in a contemporary convent who is accused of killing a newborn baby. She remembers nothing about the incident, including whether she had a child at all.

“Agnes Dei” explores the possibility of a miracle in the modern world, Raudsepp said, adding that violence and intolerance can affect even the lives of the most withdrawn and humble people.

“During a tense investigation within the convent walls, it becomes clear whether the universe still has a surprise in store for us and how the love of a young nun reaches a tragic triumph,” Raudsepp said.

The production will not tour other theatres in Estonia. It can be seen only at Rakvere Castle’s convent building.

The play was written by John Pielmeier and translated by Lauri Saaber. Reili Evart, from the Estonian National Opera, designed the set, while Kerdo Vainer created the lighting design. The cast includes Ülle Lichtfeldt, Tiina Mälberg and guest performer Luisa Lõhmus.
