LSM reported that construction has begun in Vecāķi, a district of Riga, on a cycle route that will connect with an existing route in Ādaži Municipality leading to Carnikava.

The route will run alongside the Riga–Skulte railway line and include a shared path for pedestrians and cyclists. The project covers more than 1.7 kilometres, is valued at one million euros and is divided into two stages.

Oto Ozols, deputy head of Riga City Council’s Cycling Infrastructure Division, said the first stage is expected to take three months. The existing cycle route in the neighbouring municipality floods in spring, so the contractor will build a temporary route during construction to address the problem immediately.

The second stage is scheduled to begin in late autumn and be completed next year.
