Suspect arrested after woman found shot dead in Zarasai district

LRT reported that a woman was found dead with a gunshot wound at a homestead in Dusetų eldership, Zarasai district, on Friday morning. Police later arrested a 50-year-old man in Utena following a large-scale search operation.
Police received the report at about 4:38 a.m. on August 21. Officers immediately began searching for the suspect, deploying additional forces and calling in officers from Aras, the Lithuanian Police Anti-Terrorist Operations Unit. State Border Guard Service officers were also informed.
At about 7:40 a.m., police stopped a car at the junction of Pramonės and J. Basanavičiaus streets in Utena. The suspected man, who was born in 1976, was detained. BNS reported that he was not carrying a weapon when arrested and had a blood alcohol level of 1.89 promille.
A pre-trial investigation has been opened on suspicion of murder. A prosecutor from the Panevėžys Regional Prosecutor’s Office is due to ask a court to order the strictest preventive measure, detention, against the suspect.
Police and other services remain at the scene, carrying out initial procedural actions and establishing the circumstances of the incident.
