Kanuti Gildi Saal unveils 26th season programme

Kanuti Gildi Saal’s 26th season will feature new works by Siim Tõniste, Elina Masing, Maria Metsalu and others, ERR reports.

Siim Tõniste’s new production “Tivoli” will premiere on September 23, placing audiences in a nostalgic but changing world. Filmmaker Piibe Kolk will present the personal lecture-performance “It’s Not a Place, It’s a Shape. Andy Männik’s Archive”, which explores the archive of Andy Männik, a New York-based carpenter and founder of the avant-garde art space The Kitchen.

Elina Masing will collaborate with final-year performers, choreographers and directors from the University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy on a production that began with the questions, “What happens when our passion finds no use or acceptance?” and “What happens if everything does not go as we want?”

Getriin Kotsar’s debut production “Atlas”, premiering in November, grew out of moving around without a map, the inability to get lost and the borderline feeling between what is “ours” and what is “foreign”.

In December, Maria Metsalu’s production “Püsielanik”, which premiered at the Oslo National Museum in April, will arrive in Tallinn.

The autumn programme will also feature South Korean artist Jaha Koo’s production “Haribo Kimchi”. The audience will find itself in a pojangmacha, a typical late-night snack bar found on the streets of South Korea.

Barbara Lehtna’s “Background Fucker”, set in the wild East of the 1990s, moves between memory and myth, and between a country learning to stand on its own and a body learning to survive in it.

Several co-productions will premiere abroad before coming to Estonia. Krõõt Juurak’s “The Bare Minimum”, representing the absolute minimum that can be expected from stand-up comedy or life in an uncertain world, will premiere at the Steirischer herbst festival in Graz.

At CAMPO in Ghent, Kim Noble will present “In Pursuit of a Wonderful Nothing, not an ordinary book launch”. To mark the publication of his first and, he says, probably last book, Noble will give a lecture on writing, books and words that can help with writing a book, an email or a message to a loved one.

Keithy Kuuspu will curate Saal3 in December, joined in the short-performance format by Anumai Raska, Raido Mägi and Mari Ann Valkna. The spring programme will include the short-performance festival Made in Estonia Maraton and the annual Ümberlülitus festival in Tartu.

The season will begin in August with Tallinn Fringe Festival. It will be followed by Robin Täpp’s “Drive-In”, performed in a car in Tallinn and Tartu; Liisa Saaremäel and Keithy Kuuspu’s “Millest on tehtud väikesed tüdrukud”; Sofia Martila’s “SÜDA”; and Maike Lond’s tour of “Three Ballads, a Story and My Mother’s Estate” at the Homo Novus festival in Riga.
