Lithuania to build EUR 40 million camp for 1,000 allied troops

Lithuania will build a new camp at the Rūdninkai military training area for German and other NATO allied troops arriving for exercises, LRT reported, citing the Ministry of National Defence.

The camp will cover seven hectares and include residential and engineering facilities. It is expected to accommodate more than 1,000 soldiers.

A contract to prepare the camp’s design proposals entered into force this month. The project is estimated to cost around EUR 40 million and is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2028.

The camp will include residential and service buildings, as well as the necessary engineering and transport infrastructure.

Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas said the project showed that Lithuania was meeting its commitments as an ally. He said investments in military infrastructure were being made strategically and comprehensively to ensure that the German brigade and other NATO troops could train and live in suitable conditions in Lithuania.

Germany plans to deploy a brigade of around 5,000 troops in Lithuania by the end of 2027, according to BNS. Most of the brigade will be based at the Rūdninkai training area. At Rukla in Jonava district, Germany plans to deploy engineering and intelligence units rather than combat units.
