Piejūras Hospital opens modern rehabilitation unit in historic Liepāja building

Piejūras Hospital in Liepāja has opened a modern rehabilitation unit in a historic building designed by architect Paul Max Berchi, LSM reports. The project cost nearly one million euros and was financed with support from the European Union’s Recovery Fund.

The hospital has undergone several changes in recent years, including improvements to its courtyard and landscaping. Its patient admissions unit was reconstructed last year, and the new rehabilitation unit is the latest development project, completed in less than a year and a half.

Hospital board member Liene Veikerte said the building had been in an emergency condition, with a partially collapsed roof and rooms that were unsafe to use. The renovations preserved the building’s historic appearance, although the available funding was not sufficient to fully restore the façade.

Patients will be able to receive physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychological consultations and other rehabilitation services at the unit. The project included upgrades to engineering systems, roof repairs, replacement windows and doors, redesigned rooms, improved accessibility, new equipment and furniture, and improvements to the surrounding grounds.

The hospital said the new facility would provide a safe, modern and patient-friendly rehabilitation environment for both patients and specialists.

The professional team is led by a psychiatrist, who appoints specialists and evaluates rehabilitation outcomes. Chief physician Evija Siliņa said existing services could now be provided in one place and expanded with additional opportunities.
