CSDD board submits resignation after cyberattack and data leak

The board of Latvia’s Road Traffic Safety Directorate, known as CSDD, has submitted its resignation after a cyberattack and extensive data leak, LSM reported on Wednesday. Transport Minister Rihards Kozlovskis has also asked all members of the CSDD executive board to step down.

Kozlovskis invited the CSDD supervisory and executive boards to a meeting on Wednesday morning. Before the meeting, he received the supervisory board’s resignation letter. During the meeting, he said he saw no possibility for the executive board to continue working under the current circumstances and asked all of its members to resign.

President Edgars Rinkevics said on Tuesday that the institution’s management could not continue working in such circumstances. Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs also called for the CSDD board and supervisory board to resign.

The CSDD supervisory board is chaired by Kristians Godins, with Janis Brazovskis and Maris Macijevskis serving as independent members. The executive board is chaired by Aivars Aksenoks, with Dace Benhena and Janis Liepins as members.

Kozlovskis has ordered an expedited official investigation to establish all the circumstances and identify those responsible for the cyberattack and extensive data leak. The investigation will also assess CSDD’s contract with Tet for cybersecurity services. The minister said CSDD pays a significant monthly sum for those services.

He said the immediate priorities were to ensure the continuity of CSDD’s work and data security, as well as to restore the directorate’s reputation. Kozlovskis also said CSDD and Cert.lv, the institution responsible for preventing information technology security incidents, must clearly inform the public about how CSDD customers should protect their data.

Aksenoks told Latvian Television on Wednesday that he planned to resign only after checks into the cyberattack had been completed.
