Katrin Pärn says writing is her safe place

Actor and singer Katrin Pärn told ERR’s television programme Ringvaade that she has always wanted to sing on stage but was also deeply afraid of it. She said that fear has now disappeared as her confidence has grown, while writing remains her “safe place”.

“We formed the band a long time ago, but then we stopped working together for a while. We met again at the bassist’s birthday, where we played a few songs and wanted to continue. So we made an album and now we are giving concerts,” said Pärn, the lead singer and songwriter of the band Külm Mai.

Pärn said she had always wanted to sing on stage but had also been very afraid to do so.

“I have never considered myself much of a singer, so I have always had a tremendous fear of singing. But I want to do it too, so I keep balancing between the two. Now the fear has disappeared. I have become more confident and older, and I no longer care as much about what other people think of me,” she said.

Pärn writes lyrics and sets them to music. “Writing is breathing for me. I have written poems all my life,” she said. She added that she had never considered her own songs worthy of being performed, although she greatly enjoyed hearing other people sing her texts.

“The world of writing is my safe place. I am not afraid of it,” Pärn said.

Because working in the band is a side hobby for its members, Külm Mai does not perform very often. All of them have many other activities as well.

“I really like having many different things to do. I probably could not devote myself to just one thing. I do not know how to do that,” Pärn said.

This summer, Pärn appeared in the production Baskin, which premiered in Kiidjärve. She said she had received very positive feedback for her role as Baskin.

“My father Eino also sometimes sang. He did not consider himself a great singer either, but he could carry a tune beautifully,” Pärn recalled.
