Suspect in Avižieniai woman’s killing remains under medical care

The man suspected of killing a woman in Avižieniai village, Vilnius district, remains in hospital under medical supervision nearly two weeks after the incident, LRT reported.

“The pre-trial investigation into the suspected killing is continuing. The issue of a preventive measure is not currently being decided because the suspect is under medical care due to his health condition. The suspect had not been convicted previously,” Gintarė Vitkauskaitė-Šatkauskienė, chief specialist at the Prosecutor General’s Office’s Communications Division, said in a response to ELTA.

On August 4 at around 2 p.m., a man born in 1994 allegedly stabbed a woman born in 1983 in Avižieniai. Her death was pronounced at 2.40 p.m.

According to the Police Department, the suspect had also injured himself with a knife. After receiving medical assistance, he was taken to a hospital in Vilnius.

Police said the man had been issued a protection order for domestic violence. He allegedly smashed a window with a stone or another object, entered the woman’s home and attacked his former cohabiting partner.

“At 2 p.m., a woman reported domestic violence. She said that her former cohabiting partner had smashed a window and that a domestic violence protection order had been issued against him,” Julija Samorokovskaja, head of the Communications Division at the Vilnius County Police Headquarters, told ELTA.

She said the 31-year-old man may have injured his 43-year-old cohabiting partner with a knife. After attempts to resuscitate the woman, paramedics pronounced her dead.

A pre-trial investigation was opened under Article 129, Part 2, Point 3 of Lithuania’s Criminal Code. The provision states that a person who kills a close relative or family member may be sentenced to between eight and 20 years in prison or life imprisonment.
