Lithuania to reorganise Vitkus engineering battalion into regiment

Lithuania’s Colonel Juozas Vitkus Engineering Battalion will be reorganised into a regiment from Saturday as the country expands its military capabilities and develops the First Division, LRT reported, citing the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

The engineering regiment is being established to improve support for the arrival of allied forces, increase the armed forces’ mobility and counter-mobility, strengthen overall engineering support and contribute more effectively to the development of military infrastructure.

The reorganisation also continues the history of Lithuania’s interwar military engineers. In 1921, as the armed forces grew and modernised and the number and scope of tasks assigned to engineers increased, an Engineering Regiment was formed.

A ceremony marking the establishment of the Colonel J. Vitkus Engineering Regiment of the Land Forces and the change of commanders will be held on Monday in the courtyard of the Vytautas the Great War Museum in Kaunas.
