Animator Natalia Mirzoyan opens Estonia-inspired exhibition in Tallinn

Animator, artist and illustrator Natalia Mirzoyan has opened her solo exhibition “Observations from Estonia” at Nõmme Maja in Tallinn, ERR reports.

Mirzoyan, who lives and works in Nõmme, is an internationally recognised animation director. Originally from Yerevan, she has studied sociology, painting and animation and holds a master’s degree from the Estonian Academy of Arts.

After Russia launched its full-scale war against Ukraine, Mirzoyan left Russia and moved to Estonia, where she continues her creative work.

The exhibition features paintings and drawings reflecting Mirzoyan’s adaptation to her new home. Her work combines the storytelling skills associated with animation with the direct emotional impact of painting. She depicts moments that have caught her attention in Estonia, including Nõmme streets, Tallinn’s urban landscape, changing natural scenery and small but meaningful details of everyday life.

Last year, Mirzoyan’s short animation “Snow Accompanies Us”, made using fabric manipulation and puppet-film techniques, was selected for the La Cinef competition programme at Cannes. The film has since screened at most major animation festivals, winning a number of awards, and was also included on the shortlist for the European Film Awards.

“Observations from Estonia” will remain open at Nõmme Maja until the end of September.
