Pinocchio inspires international illustration exhibition in Tallinn

ERR reports that an international illustration exhibition centred on Pinocchio opened on August 11 at the Estonian Children’s Literature Centre, a children’s literature institution, in its main hall and staircase gallery.

Curated by illustrator Viive Noor, the exhibition features original works by 55 illustrators, offering new interpretations of Carlo Collodi’s famous children’s literature character. It allows visitors to compare how the same classic is viewed across 20 countries and cultures.

“The exhibition is a small tribute from the international community of illustrators to a great writer who enchanted us all in childhood with the adventures of his wooden puppet,” Noor said.

She said the artists had been free to depict whatever connected most strongly with their own feelings or memories, ranging from illustrations faithful to the text to poetic impressions and flights of fantasy only loosely linked to Collodi’s original work.

The participating artists come from Iran, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, Germany, Ukraine, Estonia, Canada, South Africa, France, Lithuania, Belarus, Hungary, Croatia, Latvia, Poland, Slovenia, Finland and Israel.

The exhibition will remain open until November 29.
