The Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) has nominated military affairs expert Andrejus Šildiajėvas as its candidate in the early parliamentary election in the Nalšia North single-member constituency, LRT reports.

TS-LKD chairman Laurynas Kasčiūnas said the party had chosen a patriotic candidate with knowledge of security structures.

“We are nominating a candidate who knows what the struggle for freedom in Ukraine means and is a patriot of Lithuania,” Kasčiūnas said. He added that Šildiajėvas’s expertise would contribute to strengthening the resilience of residents in the Visaginas, Zarasai and Ignalina regions.

Šildiajėvas said it was important to discuss comprehensive prevention of threats and to strengthen all Lithuanian citizens’ resilience to disinformation.

“Threats around our borders and in our country are constantly increasing. We therefore need to know what we will do and how, be prepared and switch on critical thinking,” he said.

The early election in the Nalšia North constituency will take place on November 8.

The election was made necessary by the death in late May of Liberal Movement MP Jevgenijus Šuklinas, who had been elected in the constituency. The Central Electoral Commission revoked his parliamentary mandate in early June.

Šuklinas, a prominent canoeist, was elected to parliament with the Liberal Movement in 2024 and belonged to the party’s parliamentary group.

Under Lithuania’s Electoral Code, an early parliamentary election must be held within six months when the mandate of a lawmaker elected in a single-member constituency ends. Such an election is not held if less than one year remains until the regular parliamentary election date set under the Constitution.
