The Union of Nations and Justice, also known as the Centrists and Nationalists, has nominated Dalia Štraupaitė for the early parliamentary election in the Nalšios Northern single member constituency, LRT reported, citing ELTA.
“D. Štraupaitė is one of our best choices. She knows how to work, how to win and how to be with the people,” the party said in a statement.
Štraupaitė currently serves on the Visaginas municipal council. She has also previously been mayor and deputy mayor of Visaginas, mayor of Dūkštas, and a member of the Ignalina District Municipal Council.
The early election in the constituency will take place on November 8.
The election was triggered by the death in late May of liberal lawmaker J. Šuklinas, who had been elected in the constituency. Lithuania’s Central Electoral Commission annulled his parliamentary mandate in early June.
Šuklinas, a canoeist and known athlete, was elected to parliament in 2024 with the Liberal Movement and belonged to its parliamentary group.
Under Lithuania’s Electoral Code, an early parliamentary election must be held within six months when the mandate of a lawmaker elected in a single member constituency ends. Such an election is not held if less than one year remains before the date of the regular parliamentary election set under the Constitution.
