Latvia moves second measles vaccine dose to age four

Latvia will bring forward the second dose of the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine from age seven to age four, LSM reported, citing amendments to the government’s child vaccination schedule.

The change follows a growing risk of measles spreading in Europe and an outbreak recorded in Latvia this year. By April 15, 49 cases had been registered in the country, including 30 among children. None of the affected children had been vaccinated against measles.

The Ministry of Health cites the World Health Organization’s recommendation that at least 95% of the population receive two measles vaccine doses to prevent the infection from circulating in society. According to the ministry, one dose protects about 93% of people, while two doses protect about 97%.

Until now, children received the first dose of the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine at 12 to 15 months and the second at age seven. Under the revised schedule, the second dose will be given at age four.

During the transition period, children aged five to seven who have not yet received their second dose will also be vaccinated. Seven-year-olds will be prioritised, and the ministry plans to complete revaccination for this age group within two years.

The timing of the first dose will also change. The first doses of the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine and the chickenpox vaccine will be given at age 12 months instead of within the previous 12-to-15-month interval. The ministry said this would give children earlier protection against the infections.

The 12-to-15-month interval will remain for other vaccinations scheduled at that age as continuation of a course that has already begun.

The changes to the vaccination schedule will have no additional impact on the state budget. Latvia’s Disease Prevention and Control Centre said in the spring that childhood measles vaccination coverage had fallen below the 95% level needed for community immunity.
