The Democratic Union For Lithuania has nominated Antanas Šakalis, head of the Dūkštas eldership in Ignalina Municipality, for the early parliamentary election in the single-member Nalšia North constituency, LRT reported.
Šakalis is a member of the party and deputy chair of its Ignalina district branch.
“It is important for the Democratic Union not to bring a candidate to the constituency before the election who will not return afterwards, but to nominate people who live and work here and take responsibility every day,” party leader Virginijus Sinkevičius said in a statement cited by LRT.
Šakalis worked for more than 25 years in the State Border Guard Service and in the security system of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant. He has headed the Dūkštas eldership for the past six years.
He also leads the Kaniūkai village community and is a member of the Ignalina district local action group and the Lithuanian Association of Elders. He sits on the board of the association Unity Is Us.
The early election in Nalšia North will take place on November 8.
The election was made necessary by the death in late May of Liberal Movement lawmaker Jevgenijus Šuklinas, who had been elected in the constituency. The Central Electoral Commission annulled his parliamentary mandate in early June.
Šuklinas, a canoeist, was elected to parliament with the Liberal Movement in 2024 and belonged to the party’s parliamentary group.
Under Lithuania’s Electoral Code, an early election must be held within six months when the mandate of a parliamentarian elected in a single-member constituency ends. An election is not held if less than one year remains until the next regular parliamentary election, calculated under the Constitution.
