The Nemuno Aušra political party has nominated former Culture Minister Ignotas Adomavičius for the early parliamentary election in the Nalšios northern constituency, LRT reported, citing BNS.

Party leader Remigijus Žemaitaitis said the decision was made by the party’s board. He said Adomavičius had previously worked in the constituency and surrounding areas.

Adomavičius stood in the 2024 parliamentary election in the Sėla eastern constituency, which includes part of the Zarasai district. He reached the runoff but lost to Social Democrat Tadas Barauskas.

“One thing is that when Ignas took part in the 2024 parliamentary election, part of his constituency included Zarasai. He was active in that area. In addition, he was tasked with spending significant time in Visaginas, Anykščiai and Zarasai to present the party’s programme and attract more votes,” Žemaitaitis told BNS on Monday.

“We did not really have anyone else who had worked in that part of the country or achieved any results in the previous election, so the board made this decision,” he added.

Adomavičius was appointed culture minister in September last year but resigned after a week following a strike by the cultural community.

The early election in the Nalšios northern constituency will take place on November 8. It is being held after the parliamentary representative elected there, Jevgenijus Šuklinas, died in May.

Eleven parties are expected to field candidates in the constituency. Former doctor and former presidential candidate Eduardas Vaitkus also plans to contest the seat.

The ruling Lithuanian Social Democratic Party has nominated Environment Ministry Chancellor Vladislav Kondratovičius. The Liberal Movement is putting forward lawyer Mėta Paulauskė, while the Freedom Party has nominated Maksimas Paukštė, chair of its Visaginas branch.

The Centre-Right Union has nominated Giedrius Dainys, the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union has nominated Gintautas Kinduris, and the Union of Nation and Justice has nominated Dalia Štraupaitė.

The Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats, the Union of Democrats For Lithuania, the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania-Christian Families Alliance and the Lithuanian Regions Party have not yet announced their candidates.

Candidates must submit their application documents by August 20.
