Environmental officers uncover 24 illegal fishing cases

Environmental protection officers in Lithuania identified 24 cases of illegal fishing during June and July, LRT reported, citing the Environmental Protection Department.

During preventive and targeted raids at various bodies of water across Lithuania, officers seized 90 prohibited fishing devices and 14 watercraft.

The damage caused to fish stocks was estimated at 11,860 euros.

Illegal fishing was detected in the Kaunas, Kaišiadorys, Jurbarkas, Švenčionys, Rokiškis and Anykščiai districts, as well as in the Krokų Lankos botanical and zoological reserve. According to the department, the offenders used set nets.

Environmental officers reminded recreational anglers that they may use only the fishing gear permitted under the recreational fishing rules.

Violations involving prohibited fishing gear or methods carry fines of between 600 and 1,500 euros. A repeat offence is punishable by a fine of between 1,400 and 2,500 euros.
