Security Service detains two over funding Russian forces

Latvia’s State Security Service has detained two people suspected of providing financial support to Russia’s armed forces for continuing military operations against Ukraine, LSM reported.

The service detained a Russian citizen who has lived in Latvia for several years on August 5. Investigators say that, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, she responded to several online appeals for financial or material support for the war effort by making regular money transfers to support Russia’s armed forces.

The criminal proceedings, launched on February 12, 2025, concern the financing of an armed conflict, an offence covered by Section 77.2 of Latvia’s Criminal Law.

Another person involved in collecting money and other material benefits for Russia’s armed forces was detained in the same case on May 14. Investigators found that the Latvian non-citizen transferred the donated funds from a bank account to Russia.

Both suspects have been placed in custody as a security measure. The State Security Service said the investigation is continuing and that it will provide further information as the proceedings develop.
