Prosecutors send alleged waste-sector bribery case to court

Prosecutors have sent a criminal case against a public institution employee to the Šiauliai Regional Court on charges of bribery and the illegal installation and use of technical equipment to collect information, LRT reported, citing the prosecutor’s office.

The accused, identified as M. Š., allegedly demanded and accepted bribes from the head of a company while performing duties related to organising public procurement, overseeing contracts and monitoring service providers.

According to the case file, he allegedly sought household appliances and electronic devices worth almost 14,000 euros in exchange for favouring the company in public procurement procedures, ensuring the smooth implementation of contracts, resolving issues in its favour and taking a lenient approach to contractual breaches and service deficiencies.

The same case includes allegations that an eavesdropping device was illegally installed in workplace premises to collect information about institution employees. Officers discovered the device during a search.

The investigation was organised and led by a prosecutor from the Organised Crime and Corruption Investigation Division of the Šiauliai Regional Prosecutor’s Office and conducted by officers of the Special Investigation Service. The accused has been placed under a written undertaking not to leave. The charges carry a possible prison sentence of up to eight years.
