Ingmar Kiviloo plans to write music for television

Musician Ingmar Kiviloo is seeking work composing music for television and commercials while studying classical composition at the University of Toronto, ERR’s Vikerraadio reported.

Kiviloo told Vikerraadio that he will move to Toronto on August 12 to study at the same university as his wife. He has visited Toronto many times but has never lived there. His father was an Estonian living abroad, giving Kiviloo dual citizenship, and many of his relatives live in the city.

“I am currently waiting for answers from several places so I can work alongside my studies, specifically in composition, such as writing music for the media. I mean television and television commercials,” Kiviloo said. “I feel this is something I learned at school and that I do well, so why not put those skills to practical use?”

Kiviloo graduated from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in the spring. He said he was unable to work while studying in the United States because international students with study visas are not allowed to take jobs outside their school. In Canada, he said, he will be able to work.

Berklee has also been attended by Estonian musicians Laura Põldvere, Tõnu Naissoo, Sofia Rubina and Uku Suviste. Kiviloo said one of his teachers, Renato Milone, was surprised to learn that he was from Estonia and asked whether he knew Suviste. Kiviloo told him they were relatives, after which Milone said Suviste had been his roommate at Berklee.

On August 8, Kiviloo will give a thank-you concert at Viimsi Artium for those who supported his studies at Berklee and will continue supporting his studies at the University of Toronto.

Kiviloo said he had been accepted by eight universities, six of them in the United States, but chose the University of Toronto.
