LRT reported, citing the Delfi news portal, that Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has received complaints about the conduct of its ambassador to the United States, Gediminas Varvuolis.

According to sources cited by Delfi, some embassy employees contacted the ministry to report what they described as disrespectful behaviour, raised voices and long working hours. They also spoke remotely with the ministry’s inspector general, while the ministry’s chancellor reportedly promised specific measures to address the situation.

However, no investigation into Varvuolis was ultimately launched. The ministry confirmed this to Delfi, describing the reported complaints as rumours.

“We inform you that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not conducting an investigation into possible official misconduct by Ambassador Gediminas Varvuolis,” the ministry said.

“The ministry bases its responses on the official information available to it. We do not comment on rumours,” it added.

Varvuolis also declined to comment in detail on the reported complaints. “I am not aware of an investigation. We are always in contact with the ministry’s leadership regarding the working environment at the embassy, which is undoubtedly affected by the high pace of the embassy’s work. I am not aware of any specific circumstances, so I would not like to comment further,” he told Delfi.

Varvuolis was appointed ambassador to the United States last summer. He previously headed Lithuania’s embassies in Japan and Belgium and served as deputy head of Lithuania’s permanent representation to NATO.
