Archaeologists uncover hundreds of finds at Tartu’s Siuru site

Archaeologists excavating the site of the Siuru cultural centre in central Tartu are uncovering hundreds of historical objects every day, ERR reported.

The excavation covers about 3,500 square metres and is taking place in a construction pit more than five metres deep. Archaeologists have reached medieval and prehistoric layers, revealing drainage ditches, building foundations and evidence of active handicraft.

“A great many coins have been found. Perhaps more unusual is that we have found quite a lot of trade seals, which provide an insight into Tartu’s historical trade links with neighbouring European countries,” archaeologist Rivo Bernotas said.

Small metal objects are the most common finds. Although archaeologists already knew that the ground contained a dense cultural layer, they have found more objects than initially expected.

“There has never previously been construction on such a large scale in Tartu. The fact that such a large area can be opened up here may be exceptional in Estonian archaeology,” Bernotas said.

The archaeological work is scheduled to continue until the end of next year. Aavo Kokk, head of the central-city cultural centre, said the work was proceeding as planned and was slightly ahead of schedule, although costs were somewhat higher than originally estimated.

The excavated walls will not be preserved. Instead, they will be digitally recorded, while all small objects will be handed over to the Tartu City Museum.

Kokk said he plans to organise an exhibition somewhere in central Tartu before the new building is completed. The findings will also be digitally documented so that, for example, visitors attending a conference could be told what previously stood at the location.

Future museum visitors will walk above the centuries-old cultural layer now being excavated. The new centre itself will extend one floor deeper.
