Mycologist Kuulo Kalamees dies

Scientist and mycologist Kuulo Kalamees died on Thursday, ERR reported.

Kalamees worked at Tartu State University from 1964 to 1969 and then at the Institute of Zoology and Botany. He was a professor of mycology from 1992 to 1997 and subsequently became professor emeritus.

Research into Estonian fungal communities and their productivity began thanks to Kalamees. He compiled field guides to Estonian fungi and other books about mushrooms, and promoted their protection.

Kalamees served as president of the Estonian Naturalists’ Society from 1976 to 1985.

For his work, he received the Order of the White Star, Fourth Class, in 2012. In 2014, he was awarded the University of Tartu Medal, which recognises members for a significant long-term contribution to the university’s development.
