Argo Ideon’s book examines Kaido Kama’s political career

ERR reported that a book by Argo Ideon, an editor at ERR’s English-language news desk, will be published by Hea Lugu in September, examining Kaido Kama’s role in restoring the Republic of Estonia.

Oma riigi tegemine. Kaido Kama elu poliitikas 1987–1995 provides an account of Kama’s political career during a formative period in Estonia’s recent history. The book was sent to the printer on Thursday and is expected to reach readers at the beginning of September.

Ideon said the project began in autumn 2022, after Kama and his friend, editor Tiit Pruuli, had discussed the idea for some time. Pruuli eventually persuaded Kama to take part.

The interviews were conducted over Skype, with Kama speaking from his home farm in Võrumaa. Ideon said Kama had retained his archive and notes and was able to recall the events in detail. The book covers events that took place 35 to 40 years ago, or even earlier, and therefore already form part of Estonia’s history.

In addition to oral interviews, the book draws on Kama’s private archive, his handwritten materials and polemical articles published in the Estonian press before he became a government member. It also includes contributions from politicians and officials who worked with Kama or encountered him during that period.

Ideon said one of the most compelling subjects was Kama’s role as justice minister in Mart Laar’s government. He described Kama as one of the people who helped create the framework for Estonia’s current legal system, despite having no legal or higher education.
