Police detain several suspects in recent sexual crime cases

State Police officers in the Riga region have detained several people in recent months on suspicion of various sexual offences, including crimes against children, LSM reported. Several suspects have been remanded in custody.

On May 21 at about 9.30 p.m., police received a call from Vecāķi after a man grabbed a woman from behind and tried to drag her into a forest. The woman resisted and shouted, prompting the man to release her and leave.

After a lengthy search and analysis of information, investigators identified a possible suspect and his address. A man born in 1980, who had previously been convicted of similar crimes, was detained on July 1. On July 2, the Riga City Court remanded him in custody. The pre-trial investigation is continuing.

On May 14, police detained a man born in 1977 on suspicion of sexual activity in a public place in Imanta, near an educational institution. A criminal case was opened under Sections 1 of Articles 162 and 15 of the Criminal Law. The man was ordered to report to a police station, a security measure not involving detention.

On June 28, police detained a man born in 1966 who is suspected of exposing his genitals in the presence of a young child to satisfy his sexual urges. A criminal case was opened under Section 2 of Article 162 of the Criminal Law, and the man was remanded in custody.

On July 6, police opened another criminal case under Section 2 of Article 162 concerning the involvement of a young person in indecent activities. A man born in 1985 was detained on July 7. On July 9, he was placed under police supervision, a security measure not involving detention.

On June 18, police opened a criminal case under Section 2 of Article 162 after a man born in 1954 exposed his genitals at a children’s playground in Mālpils, Sigulda municipality.
