Incoming Kroonika editor rejects plans to revive old rumours

Leen Kadakas, who will become editor in chief of Estonian entertainment magazine Kroonika on September 1, says she has no “black notebook” of people and will not dig up old rumours, ERR reported.

Speaking on Raadio 2’s R2 Hommik programme, Kadakas said she had encountered stories in the global music industry that had not been published, but did not intend to bring them to light.

“I do not think I will start digging up any old rubbish,” Kadakas said. “I would not want to publish rumours, but I hope those people will not themselves stumble into a bigger mess.”

She said her partner, Margus Varusk, learned about the job offer a week after it was made and was able to keep the secret with her.

Kadakas said the main difference between running Kroonika and leading Universal Music’s Baltic branch was that the magazine’s work was more local and involved more people. While musicians had previously been the main focus of her work, Kroonika also covered cultural figures, politicians and athletes.

She said the two roles had similar business aspects, noting that the music industry had shifted from physical products to digital formats, while print magazines were also in decline.

Kadakas said her cooperation with the Kroonika editorial team had been good during her time at Universal Music. She added that the magazine’s print and digital operations formed one team and that she was looking forward to her first editorial meetings.

“Public figures are sufficiently vain themselves and put information out relatively publicly,” Kadakas said. “Entertainment media can only amplify that information and bring it to a wider audience.”

She said Kroonika’s large parties would continue and that the magazine would still choose the sexiest people.

Kadakas also said she hoped for good relations in the editorial office and stressed the importance of treating people politely.

“I will try to be in my best shape when I walk through the editorial office door on September 1,” she said.
